The Department of Agriculture and Water has launched a campaign to fight fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata) in citrus crops early and mid-season, as reported by the council in the industry, Pagán Juan Sanchez, who has indicated that is "one of the most dangerous pests that affect crops and citrus orchards of the region and knocked out the fruits for consumption and their presence is cause for rejection in items exported to third countries."
The council has informed that farmers will be distributed baits to activate and place on field, for anglers, and for farmers in Aledo and Totana, the point of withdrawal is the town of Totana Store, located in the Old Way fleet, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11:00 hours to 13:00 hours.
The campaign is part of the program "Clean Agriculture Murcia" and combat the pest by adult anglers catch baited with food attractants, which are placed in orchards.
In this regard, Pagan Sanchez explained that "this system together with the rational use of pesticides, allow effective control of the pest and a significant reduction or total waste in the fruit."
The Department has initiated the distribution to farmers and insecticide baits to be placed in the traps involved.
The varieties for which material will facilitate this oranges, grapefruits and tangerines early and mid-season, which is harvested between September and December.
Also, the mayor explained that "farmers who join for the first time to this initiative have to buy the traps that are directed and kept for 5 years.
