The initiative aims to encourage, from the domains and social entities, to organize joint to mark this date as World Day Lipodystrophies, that raise awareness and publicize the group of diseases involving lipodystrophy, characteristics, treatment activities , existing resources to patients and so forth.
Lipodystrophies are a group of diseases characterized by loss of adipose tissue.
Besides the loss of adipose tissue, some fat lipodystrophies a cluster occurs in certain regions of the body.
A common feature of most lipodystrophy is the predisposition to diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
The therapeutic approach of lipodystrophy is twofold: prevention and treatment of associated metabolic and cardiovascular disorders, and cosmetic treatment of the loss and accumulation of adipose tissue.
Lipodystrophy, are extremely rare diseases, with an estimated prevalence 1:200.000-1:1.500.000, which means they are difficult to diagnose correctly and therefore treat properly and efficiently.
Patients suffering from rare diseases are usually treated by doctors with limited or part of the same knowledge, which leads them to go to different specialists usually untrained in these diseases, to undergo various diagnostic tests, sometimes unnecessary, and repetitive frequency and to receive updated information when insufficiently inaccurate.
