The Public Health Department of the City of Totana reports that, as a result of an outbreak of rabies in the province of Toledo recently, the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia has made mandatory annual rabies vaccination pets human habitat, and in particular of the species canine, feline and mustelids (ferrets) located in the Region of Murcia.
This measure is fixed by virtue of the publication of the Order of July 25, 2013, from the Departments of Agriculture and Water and Health and Social Policy for the control and eradication of rabies in animals and prevention of risks public health, according to sources from the municipal department.
The rabies vaccination must be conducted from July 1 to August 31, 2013, and should be vaccinated dogs and ferrets from three months and a half old, and cats from 5 months of life.
In the case of puppies they reach this age dates after made obligatory period or adults whose last annual vaccination occurred after this period, vaccination will take place according to the usual guidelines by the physicians responsible.
Rabies is a viral disease which affects mammals and hence also to man, and that in order to prevent human rabies cases, it is necessary to vaccinate the animal population which can act as a carrier, so that to obtain an adequate level of immunization in the animal population that lives in the human environment.
Also from this council are reminded of mandatory animal identification of dogs within a maximum period of 3 months old or a month after its acquisition by the implantation of a microchip.
Vaccination was carried out by veterinary surgeons at any of the authorized veterinary centers.
