The Department of Comprehensive Maintenance Services and the City has begun work this week pruning and spraying against the red palm weevil existing parks and gardens of the town, some of which beautify the urban environment Lorca Avenue One of the main thoroughfares of the city.
It also is undertaking the refurbishment of the palms of the industrial estate "The Saladar".
The red palm weevil is a beetle native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and Polynesia has been increasing its range by other subtropical and temperate planet, colonizing different species of palms.
In Spain it was introduced from Egypt and first detected in 1995 in Almuñecar (Granada).
It has now spread throughout the Mediterranean coastline and the Canary Islands, which is devastating many palm trees.
Moreover, in the coming weeks the Department will begin the work of winter pruning of mulberry trees, jacarandas tipuanas and in other parks and streets of the town of Totana, according to sources in this department.
