The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Javier Celdrán, attended today, along with Mayor Totana, Andrés García, the inauguration of the 'Argaric House', a replica of the buildings that occupied the town of La Bastida during the Age of Bronze and that the Autonomous Community has financed with 32,000 euros.
With this new performance, "the experience of visitors who come to what is one of the most outstanding sites in our region and Spain, and which is one of the great exponents of Argaric culture and prehistory in Europe is improved" said Celdrán, who reiterated "the strong commitment of the regional government for our heritage and for supporting research, recovery and enhancement of deposits, facilitating their knowledge and visit to citizens."
The person in charge of Culture announced that his department is finalizing the announcement of the subsidies in competitive concurrence of support to the programs of archaeological and paleontological action in 2018, to which will allocate one million euros and that any entity without profit spirit or will be able to request town hall.
"In the Region there are 2,000 deposits and some 20 have an exceptional value." This archaeological wealth is precisely what has led us to call these grants, for which priority will be given to projects of scientific interest that aim, above all, to complete and consolidate initiated actions, putting in value the discoveries already made ", explained Celdrán.
Investment in La Bastida
The financing of the 'Argaric House' adds to the more than 1.3 million euros that the Community has invested directly in the La Bastida field since 2009. Among the latest actions, the concession of about 60,000 euros is also included Totana City Council to carry out works to consolidate the structures designed to maintain the integrity of the site and prevent landslides and dragging, which have already been carried out.
As a complement to the economic contributions, the counselor indicated that "Culture is also working on other lines that are converting this site into one of the most important archaeological sites in the region, such as the cession for its exhibition in Totana of several of the pieces found in the excavations that study Cultural Assets and that will allow a wider tourist route to visitors, contributing to the development and enrichment of the municipality.
The 'Casa Argárica' is included as of this weekend in the visits offered to the site and that take place on Saturdays and Sundays, at 9:00 and 10:00 am.
La Bastida also organizes school visits, theatrical tours, workshops for children and adults and other activities on which more information can be obtained at the Tourist Office (telephone: 968 418 553).
La Bastida was inhabited about 4,000 years ago, although its most splendid period was around 1550 BC, when it occupied 40,000 square meters and hosted a population of between 800 and 1,000 inhabitants.
The archaeological works began in the 19th century and, at present, a team from the Autonomous University of Barcelona is in charge of the excavations.
The site is characterized by its size and by the large number of exhumed structures and recovered materials.
Recovery of the Uzeta Fountain
In addition, the counselor Javier Celdrán visited the Juan de Uzeta de Totana Fountain, to whose rehabilitation the regional government allocates a total of 59,490 euros.
The work is currently pending bidding by the City Council.
The Council of Government approved in December the granting of this aid, because the monument showed signs of aesthetic degradation and problems of functioning of the water flows, which made necessary a deep conservation action to avoid the loss of original elements and return to the set an image that allows the original morphological and chromatic reading.
The fountain was built in the eighteenth century, south of the Plaza de la Constitución, and is part of an urban group of great artistic value in which is the Church of Santiago Apóstol, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, to the west;
the Consistorial House, to the north;
and the House of Contributions and the Plaza de la Balsa Vieja, to the east.
The rehabilitation of the source of Totana, said Javier Celdrán, "adds to the many actions that Culture is doing in terms of protection, promotion and dissemination of the assets that make up our rich historical heritage, for which we take special care to ensure that help to turn the Region of Murcia into an example of heritage recovery and quality cultural tourism ".
