The City Council of Totana advocates to project in the coming months a permanent museum collection of pieces extracted during the excavations at the archaeological site of La Bastida in the former headquarters of the Technological Center of Crafts, located on the Rambla de La Santa avenue in this town, in order to expand and improve the local tourist offer.
For this, the totanero Consistory has already requested the Directorate General of Cultural Assets of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment the transfer of a part of the archaeological repertoire that allows the enhancement of a museum space to complete the visit to Totana, having as axis the Argaric site of La Bastida.
This was announced by the councilor of Archaeological Sites, Juan José Cánovas, during the presentation of the program of visits and activities offered at the site this year by the new company in charge of managing the guided tours of the park, the company specializing in the management heritage tour "Culture Connection".
This building, which is currently closed, is to be exploited by including it within the offer of a tourist circuit offered to Totana for a full day, which would bring together the guided tour to the site - seven kilometers from the city -, the visit to said exhibition in this infrastructure and other central attractions of the urban area.
For this, the councils of Tourism and Archaeological Sites are already negotiating with the interested hoteliers of Totana the possibility of offering the visitors beneficiaries of this package the so-called "argaric menu".
The councilor explained that this initiative is part of an Integral Tourism Plan that aims to involve the economic agents of the municipality, in this case, hoteliers and merchants;
and with which it is intended to diversify the local tourist activity and reach a figure of more than 7,000 people to Totana a year with the added monographic foundation of the La Bastida field.
The mayor of Yacimientos Arqueológicos said that the profile of the visitor to La Bastida is a person interested in the site but once he makes the guided tour he leaves Totana that same day, not affecting his trip in the local economy;
so he opted to offer tourism alternatives and attractive complementary food that revert in this city.
In this regard, he advocated seeking alternatives to express cultural tourism that allows the visitor to spend more time in the city than the simple visit to the site, staying to eat and visiting other places of tourist interest in Totana and its surroundings, such as La Santa , the artisan neighborhood of Las Ollerías, among others.
In addition, Juan José Cánovas announced that his department is working, in a first phase, for the municipal acquisition of existing Roman baths in the neighborhood of "La Cerámica" and the private archaeological sites of "Las Cabezuelas" and "Tira del Lienzo" ";
At the same time, a subsidy will be requested from the SEF to set up a team of unemployed workers dedicated exclusively to the maintenance of the deposits.
Also, the councilman of the branch announced his intention to work for, once you can expand the staff of public employees, incorporate the figure of a municipal archaeologist in charge of a Technical Office of Archeology that assumes the functions of control and monitoring, research, value and dissemination of the archaeological heritage, among others, as occurs in other nearby municipalities of the Region.
Offer visits and activities
During the presentation of the specialized company, was also announced by the director of "Connection Culture", Joaquin Medina, the offer of guided tours and activities that this company has been doing since last June in the archaeological site " La Bastida ", after the award of the contract.
As they explained, from June until December 31, 1,456 people visited the site, despite the fact that this summer there were extreme temperatures that affected the public's influx.
The management of the visits, which are carried out in Spanish and English, does not entail any cost for the City Council, given that the company assumes the costs of these cultural and sustainable tourism activities.
He realized the great variety of activities that are being developed in the archaeological park every weekend (two visits Saturday and Sunday) and any day of the week whenever they request it previously by booking at the Tourist Office with a minimum group of 10 people for the general public, as well as attention to the school community during the school days.
During this time, guided tours are offered that have been considerably expanded in terms of the schedules concerned;
and shortly we will also have the recreation of the Argaric House within the route;
dramatized visits (the next February 17 and April 14) with other plots and new characters;
and its increase is being studied because of the attractiveness and the excellent reception among the public.
