"This morning, in the unique enclave of the Fuente de la Plaza, or source of Totana, officially known as Fuente Juan de Uzeta, although we know for a fact that it was actually the work of the multifaceted totanero Silvestre Martínez Teruel. It was created with a basic purpose as the water supply for the city, over the years it has become an icon of the Totanera culture and an image that with the Church Tower form an urban group of great artistic value , cultural and tourist.
Since the beginning of this legislature in 2015 we have claimed the need to intervene and restore our source, since for some time now, signs of an advanced degenerative state have been observed in the monument, with evident aesthetic degradation and problems of functioning of the water flows, as well as structural deteriorations that can endanger original and unique pieces of the monument.
In August 2016, as councilor of Historical Heritage, he made official the request for a grant of € 60,000 to the Directorate General of Cultural Assets to intervene in the Source and its surroundings, endorsed by a Technical Project that detailed the needs and the interventions to be made.
Due to administrative problems, this concession was delayed, but today we can say that the procedures will be initiated as soon as possible for the preservation of one of our icons.
It is a source of joy and satisfaction to be able to share such important news with neighbors, and it is my wish that with this restoration, which I hope will be underway in a few months, in addition to consolidating and ensuring the structural part, and what can not be seen because it is inside the Fountain, we can appreciate the beauty of the original colors and marbles that our ancestors contemplated, as well as learn to value it as one of the most important elements of our artistic heritage and to preserve it for many years with the interventions projected in their environment.
