The Municipal Social Services Center, with the collaboration of the Local Police, have managed the transfer of a total of 11 “homeless” people who lived in subhuman conditions in different parts of Totana: 8 of them to different hostels in the Region of Murcia, and three more displacements of people outside the autonomous community since the coronavirus health crisis began. The Department of Social Welfare has referred these people to hostels in Murcia, Cartagena and Mazarrón; and it has helped others to acquire the ticket to travel to towns outside the Region where they had relatives. With these measures, the City Council intends to safeguard the living conditions of these people who, in many cases, lived in abandoned homes or infrastructure; and also avoid the circulation of people on public roads, seeking their confinement, according to the mayor of the branch, Javier Baños.In fact, the Department of City Services, after these efforts, has sealed the access of some abandoned buildings or infrastructure in order to prevent occupation by people, thus guaranteeing the safety and protection of the largest number of neighbors.Several weeks ago, the Municipal Center for Social Services and the Local Police of Totana enabled the School Hall Pavilion, located in the Olímpico-Las Peras neighborhood next to the IES Prado Mayor, in order to provide temporary and exceptional recourse to people "homeless" for the duration of the house confinement decreed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. These were people who lived in important sub-human conditions of unsanitary conditions, with humidity and dirt, and who did not have the usual possibilities of cleaning and feeding. This initiative was `launched, with the collaboration of Civil Protection and the help of numerous local companies.
These people showered and cleaned daily and also fed and dressed thanks to donations from families and companies, channeled through Caritas.Every time that its reception by institutions or families has been managed, this resource has been closed until assessing the evolution of the pandemic in the municipality and the state of needs of people at risk of social exclusion, specifies the councilor for Social Welfare .
