The Local Police of Totana joins this week, from yesterday until next Sunday, November 17, to the new campaign promoted by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) for monitoring and control of vehicle conditions.
This will be carried out on different roads in the municipality and aims to "reduce the number of injuries and deaths in traffic accidents and have a more accurate idea of the incidence and its evolution nationwide."
The agents will monitor that the vehicles have passed the Technical Inspection of Vehicles since the DGT insists that their age can be decisive in traffic accidents.
They also remember that "proper maintenance and tuning of the main safety elements, that is, tires, brakes, lights and signaling, is essential to combat accidents."
The campaign will pay attention to the proper maintenance and tuning of all vehicle safety elements, such as tires, lights, signage or windshield.
According to the DGT, in recent years there is a tendency to the progressive aging of the car park, with an average age of over ten years in the Region of Murcia.
"Seniority is a risk factor, since the vehicles lacking the most recently implemented security systems and equipment, in addition to suffering from problems arising from their prolonged use," the DGT said.
According to data from the DGT, 62.5 percent of the Traffic accidents in Galicia in 2018 involved vehicles with more than ten years;
while 17 percent had vehicles under four years old.
In addition, the risk of death or serious injury is multiplied by two when comparing accidents with vehicles ten to fifteen years old in relation to others in which the vehicles involved were less than five years old, point from the DGT.
