The Local Police starts today a van control campaign promoted by the DGT (28/10/2019)

The Local Police of Totana joins from Monday through October 31 to the campaign of surveillance and control of vans on the roads and highways of the municipality that aims to control the correct circulation of vehicles, their adequate technical maintenance, as well as the consumption of alcohol or drugs of the person who drives.

The campaign is promoted by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT);

and the controls will affect the speed of the vans, the excess weight of the cargo and its correct placement, the possible technical defects of the vehicles and the good condition of the tires.

In addition, the use of the seat belt, the use of the mobile phone in driving or the consumption of substances that alter the perception of the person driving the van will be controlled, the Government of Navarra explained in a statement.

The objective of the action is to reduce the accident rate of these vehicles, which account for 7% of the mobile fleet throughout the State and are involved in 11% of accidents involving victims in which 13% of people killed on the road occurred. in 2018.

According to the figures recorded, accidents with vans have increased by a significant 54% in the last five years with a fatal result of almost 1,000 deaths between 2012 and 2017.

Among the causes of the increase in accidents, there is an increase in van traffic due to the 'boom' of e-commerce and the greater number of motorists who rent a van without adequate experience.

It must be borne in mind that the driving license of a tourist also serves to drive a van, a vehicle whose total weight is two or three times higher than that of a car, which significantly influences the way of driving.

Likewise, road safety experts warn of the special importance of the good condition of the tires.

Although the cover slots must have a minimum of 1.6 millimeters, 3 millimeters are recommended to improve the safety of the circulation of the vans.

According to statistics compiled by the DGT, 81 of the occasional drivers of vans do not know the safest way to place the weight and 75% ignore the speed limits for these vehicles.

In 2018, vans were involved in 10,844 accidents with victims.

57% of the accidents occurred on urban roads, although the most serious accidents occurred in the interurban areas.
