In Spain there are currently 13 veterinary faculties, a situation that contrasts with countries such as Denmark, Sweden or Austria where they have a faculty, and, according to the latest report of the Madrid Association of Animal Veterinarians (AMVAC), there is an average excess of 9,406 veterinarians in Spain.
Despite this situation, in the Region of Murcia are considering opening a new Faculty of Veterinary, this time will be private and belong to the Catholic University of San Antonio de Murcia (UCAM), as confirmed sources of the University of Murcia.
The Board of the Faculty of veterinary medicine of the University of Murcia, held on October 30, 2018, ruled on the possible opening of a new Faculty of Veterinary in the Region of Murcia, showing his rejection of such a project and demanding the authorities competent regional authorities that do not allow the commercialization of this Degree.
This faculty, including professors, students and professionals in this sector, has thus started a campaign of information and social mobilization in front of this project.
Faced with the possible opening of this new veterinary school and being aware of the problem, the Socialist Group asks political groups to join this motion in defense of Public Education through the following agreements:
FIRST.- To show the rejection, by the City Council of Totana, before the possible opening of a new Veterinary Faculty in the Region of Murcia.
SECOND.- Require the competent authorities of the Region not to allow the commercialization of the degree in Veterinary Medicine.
THIRD.- To show our support for public education in general and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the UMU, in particular.
FOURTH.- Transfer these agreements to the University of Murcia, to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the UMU, to the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia and to the National Agency for the Evaluation of Quality and Accreditation.
