It is expected that the Totana solar farm with a power of 84.7 MW, located in Murcia, will be operational in the third quarter of 2019 and, once it is fully operational, it will have the capacity to generate 150 GWh per year.
The new solar project will involve a global investment of 59 million euros and will consist of a total of 248,000 photovoltaic modules.
Totana is one of the seven solar projects that were awarded to Endesa's renewable energy division, Enel Green Power España, in July 2017, after the third renewable energy auction of the Spanish government, in which the company was awarded a capacity of total production of up to 339 MW generated through solar energy projects.
Rome / Madrid, September 19, 2018 Endesa's renewable energy division, Enel Green Power España ("EGPE"), has started the construction of a photovoltaic solar plant in Totana (Murcia) of 84.7 MW, which means the largest solar plant of the company in Spain.
The global investment in the construction of the plant amounts to approximately 59 million euros.
"With the Totana solar photovoltaic project, the Group confirms its commitment to continue strengthening the generation mix of Spain, thus bringing the country closer to achieving its objectives in terms of renewable energies," said Antonio Cammisecra, Chief of Enel Green Power ("EGP"), the global business line for Renewable Energies of the Enel Group, a group in which Endesa is integrated.
"Our operations in Spain have allowed us to achieve a significant presence in this important and competitive market, where we will continue to display our sustainable leadership."
It is expected that the Totana plant, located in Murcia, will be operational in the third quarter of 2019. Once it is fully operational, the photovoltaic plant, consisting of 248,000 modules, will have the capacity to generate approximately 150 GWh per year, avoiding annual emission of approximately 105,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
Totana is the first of seven solar projects, with a total capacity of 339 MW, which were awarded to EGPE during the third renewable energy tender held by the Spanish government in July 2017.
Totana will be the first EGP site to use collaborative and robotic automation systems to support the company's equipment in the construction of some sections of the park, with benefits in terms of safety and quality of the works, such as greater precision and speed in the realization of activities on the site.
This project is part of the EGP program aimed at the digitization and automation of Engineering and Construction activities.
The construction of Totana will be based on the model of "Sustainable Construction Site" of Enel Green Power, incorporating the use of renewable energy during construction through a photovoltaic system that will meet the energy needs of the construction site, as well as the laying ongoing initiatives for the local population to participate in the construction of the project.
Of the seven projects awarded to EGPE in last year's tender, the Totana plant is the only one located in the Murcia region, while the remaining six projects will be located in Extremadura (three in the province of Cáceres, in the municipality of Logrosán, and three others in the province of Badajoz, in the municipalities of Talarrubias and Casas de Don Pedro).
The tender was intended to help the country achieve the goal set for 2020 to cover 20% of energy consumption with renewable energy.
EGPE is building solar installations with a power of 339 MW and wind power plants with a power of 540 MW that were awarded to the company in the last two tenders in Spain, which will mean a total investment of more than 800 million euros until 2020. Once the solar and wind projects are completed, with a global power of 879 MW, the power of the current EGPE portfolio will increase by 52.4%.
The solar project of Totana was presented before the summer to the mayor of the municipality, Andrés García Cánovas, as well as to the main social agents of the town, in a work session organized to make known not only the general data of the project, but also the Shared Value Creation Plan that will accompany it and that will be focused on maximizing the socioeconomic development of the area through various activities.
During this work session, the benefits of this project were exposed in terms of employability, environment and infrastructures.
According to the information provided by the company, it will encourage the hiring of local labor and the subcontracting of services in companies in the area.
In this sense, Endesa presented a training plan of 120 hours on knowledge in the photovoltaic field.
These courses will allow us to delve into technical aspects of the renewable sector, with the aim of improving the employability of its participants in a sector that is booming and has a clear potential growth in the area.
To this measure, others related to the environment are added, such as the energy audit at the Jose Moya Public Day Center for people with intellectual disabilities.
In this same line of action, and in order to minimize the impacts during the construction phase of the plant, various sustainable engineering actions will be carried out, which in turn will favor the use of renewable energies in the construction phase and for future uses in the municipality.
One of these actions foresees the installation of photovoltaic panels on the site to avoid the use of generators.
Once finished this, the panels will be donated to the municipality to be given a public use.
In addition, the lighting of the work will be energy efficient, thus mitigating environmental impacts.
Enel Green Power España, Endesa's renewable subsidiary, currently manages more than 1,815 MW of capacity in Spain, following the recent incorporation into its generation mix of 5 wind farms acquired from Gestinver (132 MW).
Of that total, 1,749 MW come from wind energy, 43 MW from mini-hydro and 14 MW from other renewable energy sources.
Enel Green Power, the global renewable energy business line of the Enel Group, to which Endesa belongs, is dedicated to the development and operation of renewables throughout the world, with a presence in Europe, America, Asia, Africa and Oceania.
Enel Green Power is a global leader in the green energy sector with a managed capacity of more than 42 GW in a generation combination that includes wind, solar, geothermal and hydroelectric, and is at the forefront of the integration of innovative technologies in plants of renewable energy.
