TOTANA JOINS THE "LOCAL AGENDA 21" TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, THAT RESULT IN IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR ITS CITIZENS (27/05/2008)

The Mayor of Totana, José Martínez Andreo, and the regional secretary for the Sustainability of the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Pablo Fernández Abellán, presented the implementation of the Action Plan in the municipality of "Local Agenda 21", which is a document that develops a Municipal Strategic Plan based on integration with sustainable criteria of environmental, economic and social of the municipality.

The presentation ceremony was preceded by a briefing to the workers of the City of Totana, was also attended by the Councillor for Environment, Trini Cayuela, and the general director of "Local Agenda 21", Federation Municipalities in the Region of Murcia, José Antonio Padilla Angel, who reported that it is a thousand municipalities nationwide that have joined this initiative

The Councillor for the Environment conducted a brief assessment noting that in 2007 there was a commitment to the collaboration between the Ministry of Industry, Environment and the Federation of Municipalities of the Region for the implementation of Local Agenda 21 and the creation of environmental observatories.

A year later he presented to the full City Council of Totana the ratification of the Aalborg Charter 1994 and the signing of the Aalborg +10 commitment, through which local authorities are encouraged to take a series of commitments.

The main advantages of the implementation of Local Agenda 21, as the mayor said, are "increasing the attractiveness of the improvement in quality of life and participation of citizens and local government."

Agenda 21, explained the Regional Secretary for Sustainability, is the comprehensive plan which the UN intends to transform the current development model, based on the unlimited exploitation of natural resources, and a new model of development that meets the needs of present generations without compromising the ability of future.

This program, as reported by the director general of the Local Agenda 21 has its origin in the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, arising from the participation and consensus decision-making among political representatives, staff municipal technical, stakeholders and citizens of the municipality, who are encouraged to "search for consensus and initiate a dialogue with its citizens, civic organizations, local business and industry and private companies to adopt Local Agenda 21."

To develop a Local Agenda 21 in the town effectively apply and environmental analysis, which is in progress, and social participation plan, according to the mayor of Totana.

Local Agenda 21 seeks to launch an Action Plan to achieve sustainable development applied to the human environment, considering that the relevant actors for action in the city are the local authorities and citizens.
