The image of the patron saint of Totana, Santa Eulalia of Mérida will be moved dramatically, accompanied walk by hundreds of faithful from the parish of Santiago El Mayor until Shrine next day, April 12, after finishing the restoration of the altarpiece the altarpiece in the chapel.

This was agreed yesterday by the Board of the Foundation La Santa de Totana in a meeting so that people who wish to accompany the image of Santa Eulalia back to his sanctuary in the foothills of Sierra Espuña.

The patron returned to the parish church of Santiago on January 11, after the procession, following the start of the refurbishment of the altarpiece that are undertaking the Ministry of Education, Culture and Universities and the City of Totana.

This project, with a budget of 72,600 euros, has restored the original splendor of one of the most outstanding works of the eighteenth century in the region of Murcia, whose work has been performed under the direction of the Center for Restoration of the Region of Murcia and with those who have recovered the gold and original polychrome, plus clean up the damage sustained by the passage of time.

Specifically, since the month of January has acted in this work, attributed to retablista Jerome Caballero and dated in the eighteenth century and is declared as a Cultural Monument with character.

Following a previous study that showed damage were analyzed, the scaffolding was placed and proceeded to the graphic and photographic documentation of the whole.

Subsequently, analytical samples of the different areas were performed altar materials.

The work plan also included previous protection by special role and treatment of wooden support with cleaning, disinfection, consolidation of support under the cracks and fissures and replacement of parts.

The last phase consisted in treating the gold and polychrome in various stages such as surface cleaning, removal of physical-chemical provisional protection, consolidation, cleaning, coating gaps, chromatic reintegration and final protective layer.
