La Bastida is one of the most important archaeological sites of European prehistory.

It was inhabited some 4,000 years ago in the Bronze Age Argar, and boasts an enormous potential for understanding our past and projecting the cultural and heritage of the Region of Murcia.

Excavations at La Bastida, driven by the Autonomous University of Barcelona, have shown an impressive system of stone fortifications dating from 2200-2100 BC that protected one of the main economic and political centers of the society argárica Age Bronze.

The fortification consists of parallel walls with projecting towers flanking a narrow entrance passage.

The defensive nature of these structures were as a response to significant changes in warfare and weapons in this period.

This sophisticated system fortification once again raises the question of possible contacts of the Mediterranean, along with social change and the role of physical violence in the emergence of argárica society.
