The Secretary General of the PSOE in Totana, Andrés García, regrets that the PP does not support a National Drought Decree to ensure aid to farmers (13/06/2014)

Andrés García Cánovas regretted that the PP has not supported the socialist regional assembly motion calling for the adoption of a National Drought Decree which allows to apply in areas of rainfed crops and livestock in general tax cuts, credit lines special aids and legally can be established.

"We believe the situation is dramatic and when receiving aid from Europe would be better if it was backed by a legal instrument such as the Decree of Drought."

The Socialist Party rejected the amendment to the whole by the People's Party to the Socialist motion, although separate asked for the third paragraph thereof, wherein said vote: "The Regional Assembly urges the regional government to turn urge the Government of Spain to refer to the situation of "extreme drought" in the Region of Murcia to European institutions to be put in place mechanisms for aid from European funds, "which did support.

García Cánovas, noted that this water year is being extremely dry.

"This dramatic situation not seen since 73 years ago and should go back to 1941 to find such a dry year."

In the last 7 months have just fallen in the Region of Murcia average 77 liters per square meter, while in the last 5 years the average was 231 liters per square meter.

The motion put forward by the socialist group says 66,000 hectares of planted almond there in the Region of Murcia, over 30,000 are severely affected by drought.

In fact, it is estimated that about 4 million trees have already dried, while the rest is lost harvest;

and no rain in the coming months will continue drying the almond in most rainfed areas where these can not be washed.

Other crops affected by the drought are the olive and the vine, which while hardier crop also see injured due to the lack of rain.

The socialist leader said that according to reports published by the Agricultural Organizations are about 8,000 families engaged and rainfed crops that are more drought-affected to date.

Finally, García Cánovas, warned that "no rain in the next few weeks, the situation will affect many more, being necessary support measures by the public authorities."
