"The reality of education" (23/10/2013)

TEACHERS OF JUAN DE LA CIERVA IES AND TOTANA CODORNÃU (Murcia) wishes to inform the rest of the educational community, and to other citizens, the situation we are currently in our center after two years of cuts in Education.

For starters, a significant fact:

The number of teachers in 2011-12 was 82, and today has 61, representing 21 teachers less.

THE number of students, however, did not decline in the same proportion.

The 2011-12 academic year there were 799 students and this, we have 760 2013-14, ie 39 students less.

We check for the great disparity between the two figures.

Students have declined by 5% while 30% teachers.

The immediate consequence of these figures derived directly affects the ratio (number of students per classroom) has increased considerably and even is outlawed (groups with 30 students or more where there are students with special educational needs acneaes-, when the law allows 27 if one of these students and 25 when there are two or three).

Concrete figures: of the 25 groups in secondary and high schools with which the Centre has, 18 exceeded the maximum allowable number (note that there are subjects in high school with 39, 38 and 37 students, when the maximum should be 35 per class) .

A acneaes we add many students with learning difficulties, and high capacities, which require more individualized attention that will be affected because the teacher has less time per student.

Other consequences, no less important are:

Laboratories of Physics and Chemistry and Biology can not be used by all groups given the high n ° of students.

No splittings are awarded needed.

But this has always been so.

A lab supports about 15 students.

The splittings decrease also affects languages.

In 2 High School, this course no splittings in English, with groups of 33 students.

Supports, which it has granted the Ministry of Education but have since cut after the PRC programs like (Curricular Booster Program for students with specific learning difficulties) to respond to a particular type of student and therefore within the needs of the center.

The center therefore faces the situation of having to choose between support or PRC hours.

In this course we have opted for the latter.

3 - Subjects need of new technologies (computers) and can not access them by the disproportion between the number of computers and number of students (classes of 30 students or more to 15 computers on average in the computer rooms).

Besides the direct consequences of the increased ratio ...... there are other aspects to keep in mind, and directly affect the decrease in the quality of teaching:

Teachers who teach subjects that are not specialists.

Subjects related to their subject matter and even unrelated species (that have nothing to do with the specialty you have studied and for which they have obtained the position).

The casualties of teachers not covered until 15 days.

In some cases it took up to a month.

Meanwhile, the students are served by the teachers on duty, thereby depriving him of his right to a dignified classes (sometimes 2nd courses of Bachelor with what this means in the face selectivity).

The funding for the center has grown from 104,000 euros in 2010 to 65,000 euros in 2012.

What represents a cut of 37.5% in the school budget.

In 2011 there were paid 40% of the budget, and in 2012 25%.

The budget for 2014 will be lower than that of 2013 (said in the last meeting of Directors with the Ministry of Education on 09.26.2013).

In the case of very practical subjects, Plastic, Technology and especially music, you can not devote the time necessary to adequately address the students, otherwise each topic is extended in time and the schedule is reduced (they work fewer topics less didactic units).

The International Baccalaureate hours carries a significant deficit, since for teaching the subjects they need a number of hours than what we received.

As the International Baccalaureate Program educational excellence one is paradoxical and unacceptable receive fewer resources than other programs.

The same happens with other programs such as Bilingual, Comenius, Research School ................

Students with opinion of necessity for Hearing and Language classes, no teachers have specialized care to address their situation.

The reply of the Ministry is that these students are taken care off center based on a system of grants, which forces the student to go to a special school outside school hours, when yet it can give a better answer education professionals who know the child in the center.

Everything presented here is fully transferable to any center of the region of Murcia and of course, the rest of the regions.

It occurs in any center in the country, and even worse.

The IES Juan de la Cierva and Codorníu of Totana is just one example.

Thus, we encourage the educational community to reflect on the current situation and future of our education, since students and families are most directly affected by the new measures.

The faculty already does in other forums and adopts its own actions.

How long do need to go back, if we do, to the situation prior to the cuts?

Our reality was not wasteful, but hardly enough and even with major shortages, and this must be added the obvious worsening.

Finally, we believe that education should be seen not as a cost but as an investment: THE FUTURE OF OUR SOCIETY.
