The Platform in Defence Research proposes cuts slow Research and maintenance contracts for Young Researchers (12/02/2013)

Coinciding with major cuts in science made by the current government, the month of July was set up at the Centre of Soil Science and Applied Biology Segura (CEBAS) under the Council of Scientific Research (CSIC) "Platform in Defense Public research and quality "to protest against the cuts in public administration and research.

During these months the platform has denounced the cuts and working conditions resulting from the adjustments announced by the Government, which affect workers in general, and especially those in the public service, science and Spanish.

"We report research budget reduction of 40% since 2009 dragged.

The budget of the National R & D has fallen from 547 million in 2009, to 342 million in 2012 according to the Confederation of National Associations of Spain (COSCE).

In the last call, the Government has reduced to 309 million the total amount awarded to projects compared to 384 million in the previous call ... "says Pedro Martinez.

In the latest issue of research projects approved by the Ministry of Economy concealing an additional reduction of these budgets initially an additional 20%.

The researchers behind the 3182 approved projects will receive the money in four years instead of three, as scheduled in the schedules that were budgeted according to the official announcement of December 2011.

The news is even worse because it is paralyzed payment of the last Call for Proposals of the National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research.

In this call have approved more than 300 projects with a budget of 12 million euros is not known if the investigators will eventually.

This situation is occurring in Murcia with the stoppage of the last payment of the projects funded by the Seneca Foundation Autonomous dependent annuity owed for the year 2011.

Right now and when implemented the latest resolutions above we can say that you have around 70-80% less resources for research in our region of Murcia in relation to 2009.

This situation will have an effect is devastating for the vast majority of scientists, that from this year 2013 will have a 20 to 30% of what they possessed four years ago.

Besides the main losers will be the young researchers recruited under projects that are thousands in our region and can "being stranded" for these cuts.

We recall that the Centre of Soil Science and Applied Biology Segura (CEBAS) is a Research Centre in Agriculture, Food, Water and Environment, single center under the National Research Council (CSIC) that exists in the region of Murcia.

From this center get funds for research, with which scientific knowledge is generated, staff training and develop patents ready for use in the development of society.

"Only in 2010 and 2011, workers were able to CEBAS Murcia around € 10 million from public and private institutions, both Spanish and international.

These funds generated more than 200 scientific publications in international journals and 20 patents including about 20 PhD theses in this period.

The CEBAS happens to be one of the institutes of the CSIC with more patents developed in all fields of science ... "

From the Platform for Research Support of CEBAS-CSIC advocate maintaining prioritize research contracts for young researchers to keep the future of research in our region.

1. - Reduction of the objectives of the research projects for the duration of the cuts.

2. - Renewal of the cost of implementing research projects to maintenance contracts for young researchers.
