Murcia MEP Cristina Gutiérrez-Cortines argárico visit the site of La Bastida (12/01/2013)

MEP Murcia, Cristina Gutiérrez-Cortines, today visited the site of La Bastida argárico Totana to know firsthand and find ways of financing the European Union to allow the enhancement of the park and its future projection and promotion international tourism.

During the visit he was accompanied by the Mayor of Totana, Isabel Maria Sanchez, Councilwoman Productive Sectors, María José Baeza, and members of the research team at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) directing the excavation, research and museological the park.

Excavations at La Bastida are led by the research team of the Group and Mediterranean Social Arqueoecología UAB professors formed by Vicente Lull, Rafael Mico, Rihuete Cristina and Roberto Risch, and has the support and sponsorship of the Ministry of Culture of Murcia, the City of Totana, UAB and the Ministries of Industry, Trade and Tourism and the Economy and Competitiveness, respectively.

The Mayor of Totana already meeting in Brussels earlier this year with the Executive Chairman of Murcia and the Committee of the Regions of the EU, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, and Director General for Enterprise and Industry of the European Commission, Gwenole Conzigou to establish an action plan and devise funding formulas that enable its progressive enhancement.

The claim is arbitrating Gutiérrez-Cortines European funds to become one of the park's cultural and tourist attractions of Spain in Europe and also establish links with other European cities with which to conduct joint collaborative projects, as stated in the Community rules.

The latest excavations and the result of several carbon-14 datings indicate La Bastida was probably the most powerful city in continental Europe during the Bronze Age (4200 years ago) and a fortified since its inception, to the 2200 BC with an unusual defense system in Europe at the time.

This is clear from the findings of a wall undertaken in archaeological excavations in 2012 at the site, and unearthed a massive fortification system unique in its time and the existence of more developed European settlement in political terms and military during the Bronze Age and comparable only with the Minoan civilization of Crete.

Gutiérrez-Cortines stressed the "historical monumentality" of the complex and explained that the finding of the village and investigations involving supposed "to project a boost heritage of the Region of Murcia, a space for culture, research, knowledge and unique study in continental Europe. "

Today, the village of La Bastida you can visit only by small organized groups of universities, scholars and experts as well as people in general who accumulate a waiting list of over a thousand interested.
