The scientist totanero Pedro Martinez Gomez teaches a series of conferences in Iran invited by the Ministry of Science and Technology (09/10/2012)

The totanero, Pedro Martinez Gomez, CEBAS-CSIC researcher and IU-Greens councilor in the city of Totana, gave a lecture at the University of Shahrekord in central Iran, invited by the International Center for Studies and Research Collaborations Iran (Center for International Scientific Studies and Collaboration, CISSC) under the Ministry of Science and Technology.

He also used his sight to build relationships with researchers Biotechnology Research Institute (Research Institute of Biotechnology) also Shahrekord.

This series of lectures were part of the workshop "Current Approaches for Characterizing MicroRNAs in Plants" and dealt with the analysis of RNA in the genus Prunus fruit like almond or apricot and applications for genetic improvement of these species.

He also participated as a lecturer Professor Yuke He's Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology, Shanghai in China researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Academy of Sciences) which is one of the foremost experts in the field of RNA research in plants .

The group led by Dr. Pedro Martinez is currently an international leader in DNA studies (functional genomics) in almond and other fruit such as apricot and recently is introducing a line of cutting-edge research in the study of RNA (transcriptomics) to level of messenger RNA (mRNA) and microRNA (miRNA).

In 2006 he received the International Prize "Miklos Faust International Award", awarded by the American Society of Horticulture (American Society for Horticultural Science), which awards young researchers who work in the area of plant breeding of fruit.

He also recently received the International Prize for Research "Khwarizmi International Award" in a ceremony organized by the Academy of Sciences of Iran (Iranian Research Organization for Science and Technology, IROST) for his contribution to the study of wild almond species originating in Iran and its use as a source of new genes for resistance to drought and salinity for improving cultivated almond.

Pedro Martinez Gomez, Totana born in 1970, is an Agricultural Engineer for EPS of Cartagena (1991), Agricultural Engineering from the University of Lleida (1994), Diploma in Theology (Minor Cycle) by the International Theological Institute of distance Pontifical University of Salamanca (1995), Master of Science in Plant Breeding (Plant Breeding) by the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies Zaragoza (IAMZ) (1996) and PhD in Agronomy from the University of Murcia (1998).

Dr. Pedro Martinez did his doctoral thesis as a Fellow of the CEBAS-CSIC CSIC working on genetic improvement of apricot.

After this period he joined the Department of Pomology, University of California-Davis for nearly three years as Fellow and research staff of the University of California in the U.S..

During this period he specialized in the application of biotechnology tools in improving fruit.

Currently holds the position of Research Scientist at the National Research Council (CSIC) within the Department of Plant Breeding Center Soil Science and Applied Biology Segura (CEBAS).

To date he has published a total of 150 scientific papers, 85 of them in international journals of impact, plus more than 120 communications in both national and international conferences.

It also participates in numerous research projects nationally and internationally with the USA (University of California-Davis), Canada (University of Guelp), Chile (Universidad de Chile), Italy (University of Padua), France (INRA Avignon and Bordeaux ), Hungary (Hungarian Academy of Sciences), Cuba (Havana University), Iran (University of Yazd, Isfahan, Tehran and Tabriz), Tunis (Tunisia University) and Morocco (Universities of Meknes, Agadir and Marrakech).
