President Fernando López Miras receives the mayor of Totana (13/02/2018)

developing some state regulation that allows to regulate its payment in a term of 35 or 40 years |

The mayor of Totana, Andrés García has requested that the term that the City Council has to face the payment of his debt, which currently amounts to about 120 million euros, about six times over the municipal budget be extended.

The mayor today transmitted that request to the president of the Autonomous Community, Fernando López Miras, with whom he met this morning at the Palacio de San Esteban in Murcia, where they discussed the difficult economic situation facing the municipality.

The first mayor of Totana has held an institutional meeting, for the first time in this term, with the president of Murcia, who besides addressing the economic situation of the City Council, has addressed other needs that the town has in terms of water and infrastructure , among other matters, informs the Community.

During this meeting, the mayor of Totana transferred to the president his demands regarding the water supply network, both in the urban area and in the industrial estate;

They discussed the situation of the industrial park "El Saladar", as well as in relation to the Municipal Plan of Urban Planning and the Argaric site of La Bastida, among other issues.

In relation to this last matter, last week the 'Argaric House' of the La Bastida site was inaugurated in Totana, a replica of the buildings that occupied this town during the Bronze Age and which has been financed thanks to the contribution of 32,000 euros from the Community.

As he explained, most of the meeting has been devoted to discussing the economic-financial situation and financing needs to maintain the excavations and enhance the archaeological site of La Bastida.

The mayor of Totana has explained that, although in this legislature the municipal debt has been reduced, it is currently around 120 million euros, a figure "unpayable" taking into account that the annual budget of the City is about 20 millions of euros.

In addition, to those 120 million are added another 60 million euros provided for the payment of "contingencies", explained, which are derived from various open judicial processes, such as the claim of 10 million euros from the previous company awarded the service of water, which was remunicipalized, or those derived from the urban agreements.

García Cánovas recalled that the situation has improved in recent years, since it has faced all the defaults that the City Council had, which has taken all the extraordinary measures offered by the Ministry of Finance.

Thanks to them, they have refinanced - he recalled - all the loans lowering the interest around 1 percent, increasing the grace period to about 20 years, and the Consistory has been updated with banks and with the payment to suppliers.

However, the totanero councilor has considered that it will take a longer period, between 35 and 40 years to meet the payments, because otherwise, when the current grace period passes, there will again be difficulties in the town hall. saying.

For this reason, he has insisted on the need for the central government to launch new measures to regulate this situation, which affects around half a thousand municipalities throughout Spain, making some regulations that allow to increase the periods of payment of the debt. .

Another of the main issues he has addressed with the regional president is that of the enhancement of the archaeological site of La Bastida, one of the most important of that prehistoric era, which is currently only excavated on 15 percent of its surface.

García has proposed that the autonomous community and private patrons collaborate in the musealization of that site and has indicated that one of the municipal projects is to install the museum of the site in a cataloged house located next to City Hall, the so-called General Aznar's house.

The idea, he said, is to launch a foundation owned by the City Council, the autonomous community and potential private investors, to restore it and turn it into a museum in which to house all the pieces recovered from the site.

Other matters of general interest affecting the municipality of Totana, such as the Circunvalación Oeste, have also been discussed, as well as the implementation of an extraordinary investment plan in roads in districts and replacement of road surfaces in the urban area, the extension of the municipal cemetery and the nursing home "La Purísima".
