The mayor knows firsthand about the prevention work carried out by the forestry brigades in Sierra Espuña (04/08/2017)

The mayor, Andrés García, and local officials of the Civil Protection Association, have accompanied the members of the forest brigades of the Autonomous Community that provide prevention and surveillance services in the municipal territory of the regional park of Sierra Espuña this summer.

The municipal authorities already visited this week the volunteers of the Local Association of Civil Protection of Totana that reinforce, with works of mobile surveillance and technical and human support, the fire works carried out by the forestry brigades of the Ministry of the Environment in this municipality.

The first mayor attended together with the head of the Volunteer Group of Civil Protection in Totana, José María Sánchez Pascual, and municipal technicians in this area, in order to know firsthand the work they do in the natural park in these months of the summer.

These works are carried out within the framework of the Emergency Civil Protection Plan for Forest Fires in the Region of Murcia (Plan INFOMUR), which aims to establish hierarchical and functional organization, in order to protect people, property and the environment.

The Infomur Plan is in force from June to September 30, focusing its activity on surveillance, extinction or coordination tasks;

And as a main novelty, this year, there have been included in the mobile surveillance tasks couples of Civil Protection volunteers who watch, as is the case, the main natural areas.

With this visit they wanted to give support to their work and to know the specific professional skills that they develop for the intervention in forest fires and the coordination among different organisms.

These terrestrial extinction teams, generically called Forest Brigades (BRIFOR), are responsible for carrying out the direct attack on the front of the fire;

And are composed of specialists in prevention and extinction, equipped with all kinds of hand tools and the support of the bus that carries them.

In addition to these basic extinction units, Rapid Intervention Brigades (BIR) are also set up in the Region, which are composed of specialists who carry out surveillance and prevention activities with light vehicles.

All of them are led by specialized environmental agents who are knowledgeable about the territory.

All of them are units specialized in fire management, direct and indirect attack and they develop their work under protocols of action and security. These works are supported by volunteers of Civil Protection in Totana have been doing their daily work from mid-June to the September 15 in strategic spots of Sierra Espuña, such as La Santa, the heart of Jesus, the Big Balsa, the Forest House and Deposit of Las Alquerias, Collado Bermejo, Casa Rosa, Caruana, Purgatorio, Llano de Las Cabras, Cañada De Prior and crossing of New Homes, among others.

These brigades have been in Totana since this week with a new vehicle with which the Autonomous Community has reinforced since this week the forest brigade of Sierra Espuña, which is at the base of the Municipal Civil Protection Center in the old College "La Cruz".

The new truck has a 4,000 liters fire extinguisher and additional safety measures such as anti-tip bars and cab protection and tires, powered by an electric pump to prevent collapse in the event of an off-road motor stop.

The vehicle is a model "Iveco Magirus" truck that will help improve the protection of the saw throughout the year;

And will complete the work of prevention and firefighting in the regional park of Sierra Espuña.

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment has made available to the forest brigades a total of eight new vehicles throughout the Region, one of them for the natural park of Sierra Espuña.

This will be used for the work of forestry prevention and fire fighting, thus renewing the fleet of vehicles that were using and increasing the performance and safety of the members of the brigades, which in the case of Totana around seven or eight members.
