Several thousands of people accompany the image of Santa Eulalia in its traditional romería of descent to Totana in a great festive atmosphere (08/12/2016)

Thousands of people today accompanied the Patron of Totana, Santa Eulalia de Mérida, in its traditional descent from its sanctuary in Sierra Espuña to the city, in the hermitage of San Roque, where it will remain until tomorrow afternoon.

Later, the image will be transferred in procession to the church of Santiago next Saturday, feast of Santa Eulalia, where it will remain until January 7 that will return, again in pilgrimage, to its hermitage.

According to police sources, more than 10,000 people attended today the pilgrimage of La Santa, among faithful and members of gangs who participated in the festive day, clothing the patroness of Totana on one of the great days of these local festivals.

To this figure were added the hundreds of people who congregated waiting for the image in El Rulo.

From the beginning of the morning, many people were acceding to the sanctuary of La Santa, where they waited, accompanied by the songs of the crews, the hours before the beginning of the descent.

Likewise, it is estimated that the large number of attendees was due in large part to the good weather that accompanied in the day from very early.

To make it easier to wait, in the hours prior to the start of the descent there were no lack of typical dishes and sausages, accompanied by the traditional 'mantellina', which is the typical drink made from honey, anise, water and lemon, That in bottle or in boot, serves to sweeten and to warm the throats of the pilgrims.

Also, at seven o'clock in the morning, the Celebration Department, with the Brotherhood of Kiss of Judas, as it has been a tradition, invited the pilgrims to taste a hot chocolate.

An hour later, at eight o'clock in the morning, the holy mass of farewell of the patroness of Totana in the sanctuary began.

The image of the patron left at nine o'clock in the morning, carried on shoulders by the Brothers of La Santa, and dressed in her red romera costume, preparing to travel the seven kilometers that separate her sanctuary from Sierra Espuña and the urban center Of Totana, among the crowd that has accompanied her.

Three hours later, in the middle of a festive atmosphere, the image of Santa Eulalia arrived in El Rulo, where it was received by the municipal and religious authorities and members of the La Santa Foundation, as well as by numerous neighbors That there they congregated to admire the image of the patron saint of the totaneros.

In 'El Rulo', the Patroness was received, in addition to the municipal band of the Musical Group of Totana and by a traca and fireworks.

Later, the image of Santa Eulalia was transferred to the hermitage of San Roque, on the outskirts of the town, from where it will be transferred tomorrow (17:00 hours) in procession to the parish church of Santiago.

According to Civil Protection sources, there were no incidents of consideration during the pilgrimage.

The day was developed in a great festive atmosphere due also to the good weather conditions that took place during the morning.

Prohibition of fires

This year, following the instructions of the Autonomous Community, on the occasion of the pilgrimage, only vegetable fires could be carried out in the areas with barbecues in El Angel and El Grifo, next to the sanctuary of Santa Eulalia, So that outside of these spaces it was strictly forbidden to carry out vegetable fires in the open air on the occasion of the pilgrimages.

In addition, on an exceptional and exclusive basis, gas stations could be used outside the areas established for cooking the traditional dishes of pilgrimages, such as traditional migas ruleras.
