Authorize an agreement to supply water to the Community Irrigation Totana from the desalination Eagles (19/04/2016)

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, through the Aguas state society of the Mediterranean Basin (Acuamed) has authorized today the signing of an agreement to ensure the supply of desalinated water to the Community of Irrigators of Totana, from the Eagles-Guadalentín desalination plant.

Specifically, this agreement will allow the provision of a maximum equivalent of 10 hm3 per year, until September 30, 2016, in keeping with the Drought Decree, and extended up to a total maximum duration of one year.

This decision is the lack of water resources suffering from the Segura basin is particularly affecting those communities of irrigators, such as Totana, which are highly dependent on the Tajo-Segura.

This community of irrigators requested the State Society, under Drought Royal Decrees approved by the Government, a supply of desalinated water on a provisional basis from the plant Eagles-Guadalentín.

A mechanism articulated in the aforementioned decrees Drought to provide temporary and precarious, volumes that are not currently being used by other users, as is the case of the 10 million m3 / year that the Commonwealth of Taibilla Channel has signed with Acuamed.

Thus, while the Commonwealth does not require water desalination Eagles-Guadalentín, you can use the production capacity allocated to it to meet other demands, provided that water distribution is consistent with the demands of current users .

The authorized today Agreement to be signed between the Community of Irrigators and Acuamed, allow delivery of water in the raft of Cerro Colorado and provides for cost recovery by distributing them among the Commonwealth, who holds the priority right for the water supply, and the Community of Irrigators who will assume the variable operating costs and a portion of the fixed costs.

The desalinated water will reach the irrigable area of ​​Totana through the main pipeline distribution of desalinated water in the valley of Guadalentín built by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment within the measures authorized by Decree Drought and he entered service last March.

This drive, which leads to the town of Totana, has a total length of 27 km and involved an investment of 20 million euros.
