The mayor asks the president of the Federation of Municipalities of the Region to arbitrate measures to face the economic-financial needs that this health crisis brings (05/05/2020)

The mayor, Juan José Cánovas, recently asked, in a telematic meeting with the president of the Federation of Municipalities of the Region of Murcia, the mayor of Bullas María Dolores Muñoz, to arbitrate measures to the consistories to address economic needs- financial consequences of this health crisis.The first mayor has insisted on the need for the totanero City Council to be authorized to use the 2.3 million euros of surplus in 2019 to be able to face expenses that help the most needy social and professional groups affected by the pandemic of the coronavirus.The representative of the Federation of Municipalities of the Region has promised to send the institutional demand of the city councilor to this body and to the Federation of Municipalities and Provinces in Madrid in order to alleviate, in part, the pressure of those municipalities that have already they were in a difficult situation before the epidemic.

The secretary general of this organization, Manuel Pato, has also participated in the telematic meeting.This request has also been forwarded by the mayor on several occasions to the president of the Autonomous Community, Fernando López Miras, in telematic meetings with mayors that are held weekly on Fridays following this crisis.Juan José Cánovas has reiterated that the majority of municipalities have the problem that they have money left over but they don't let them spend it; while the case of Totana is different, because we do not have it when we are in debt but we cannot make use of that 2019 savings now.The Totana City Council has already asked the Ministry of Finance and Public Administrations to suspend the rules that regulate the spending rule so that the municipalities can address the necessary policies that allow the social protection of citizens.The mayor addressed a letter to the Minister of Finance and Public Administrations, María Jesús Montero, urging the Government to urgently consider that, while the reform of Organic Law 2/2012, of April 27, on Budgetary Stability is being carried out and Financial Sustainability, this measure is adopted.The Totanero City Council advocates the suspension of the rules that are applied in case of non-compliance with fiscal rules and specifically, the spending rule, so that the municipalities respond, now more than ever, to the needs of their neighbors.
