The good weather and the coincidence of the pilgrimage day on a festive Sunday contributed to the concentration being more massive and participatory
Thousands of people accompanied today the Patroness of Totana, Santa Eulalia de Mérida, in her traditional descent from her sanctuary in Sierra Espuña to the city, in the hermitage of San Roque, where she will remain until tomorrow afternoon.
Later, the image will be transferred tomorrow in procession to the church of Santiago, where it will remain until January 7 that will return, again in pilgrimage, to its hermitage.
According to police sources, more than 15,000 people attended the pilgrimage of La Santa today thanks to the good weather day and to coincide the festive day on Sunday, among faithful, members of gangs and neighbors who participated in the holiday and waited for the arrival to the patron saint of Totana on one of the big days of these local festivals.
To this figure were added the hundreds of people who gathered waiting for the image in the place of El Rulo.
From the beginning of the morning, many people were accessing the vicinity of the sanctuary of La Santa despite the morning cold, where they waited, accompanied by the songs of the gangs, the hours before the start of the descent.
To make the wait more bearable, in the hours before the start of the descent the typical dishes and sausages were not lacking, accompanied by the traditional 'mantellina', which is the typical beverage made from honey, anise, water and lemon, that in bottle or in boot, serves to sweeten and heat the throats of rosemary.
Also, at seven in the morning, the Department of Celebrations, by the Brotherhood of the Kiss of Judas de Totana, as has been the tradition in recent years, invited the pilgrims and assistants to taste a hot chocolate.
An hour later, at eight o'clock in the morning, the Holy Farewell Mass of the patron saint of Totana began at the sanctuary.
The image of the patron departed punctually at nine in the morning, carried on her shoulders by the Brothers of La Santa, and dressed in her red suit of rosemary, preparing to travel the seven kilometers that separate her sanctuary from Sierra Espuña and the town center of Totana, among the crowd that has accompanied her.
Three hours later, and among a great party atmosphere, the image of Santa Eulalia reached the place of 'El Rulo', where it was received by civil and religious authorities, including representatives of the Municipal Corporation and the Minister of Agriculture and Agua, Antonio Luengo, Totaneros regional deputies and members of the La Santa Foundation, as well as by numerous neighbors who gathered there to admire the image of the patron saint of the totaneros.
In 'El Rulo', the Patroness was received, in addition to by the municipal band of the Musical Association of Totana and a traca and fireworks.
Subsequently, the image of Santa Eulalia was transferred to the hermitage of San Roque, just outside the town center, from where it will be transferred tomorrow (17:00 hours) in procession to the parish church of Santiago.
According to Civil Protection sources no incidents of consideration during the pilgrimage were recorded during the pilgrimage.
The day was developed in a great festive atmosphere due also to the good weather conditions that took place during the sunny morning that partly calmed the temperatures as the day was running.
