The mayor, Juan José Cánovas, has recently met with representatives of two of the three agrarian organizations established in the municipality, in this case with the UPA and COAG-IR trade unions, in order to meet the general and updated needs and demands of the field and livestock in Totana.
Basically, the heads of the agricultural unions of Totana raised the first mayor, who wanted to maintain a first contact after his inauguration, the traditional and historical irrigation problems in agriculture and, above all, the damage caused by the proliferation of populations of wild rabbit (oryctolagus cuniculus) in crops.
The City Council already requested last March its inclusion in the Temporary Hunting Region for rabbits and the establishment of measures to reduce these populations, declared by the Ministry of Employment, Universities, Employment and Environment of the Autonomous Community.
This procedure was initiated at the request of the Paretón Hunters Society and the COAG-IR in Totana;
and the mayor committed, through the Department of the Environment, to take up and promote this issue.
The order of March 5, 2019 was intended, in accordance with Article 45 of Law 7/2003 of Hunting and Fishing Fluvial of the Region of Murcia, the initial declaration of Temporary Hunting Region by rabbits, the municipal terms of Abanilla , Archena, Fortuna and Molina de Segura in these areas.
In addition, at the request of other affected town halls, other municipalities could be included in said declaration, when there are significant damages affecting more than 30 owners and there is a density of 10 rabbits per hectare.
Said inclusion would be adopted, at the proposal of the General Directorate of the Natural Environment, following a report from the Office of Socioeconomic Promotion of the Environment.
