The restoration works of the Juan de Uzeta Fountain will be inaugurated on December 28 (15/12/2018)

The actions, which take place since the end of September, are being undertaken by virtue of the subsidy requested by the Department of Historical Heritage to the Autonomous Community

The restoration works of the Juan de Uzeta Fountain and the refurbishment of its architectural environment will be inaugurated on December 28 (10:30 am) with the presence of the Minister of Tourism and Culture, Miriam Guadiola Salmerón, the General Director of Cultural Assets , Juan Antonio Lorca, and municipal authorities of the Totana City Council.

The totanero Consistory began last September the remodeling of this emblematic infrastructure of the urban center of Totana, which are funded by the Autonomous Community under a direct subsidy processed by the Department of Historical Heritage in the amount of 42,989.59 euros

The Local Government Board awarded the contract for the rehabilitation of this infrastructure last July to the company "Salmer Cantería y Restauración, SL", with registered office in the deputation of Parrilla (Lorca).

The basic and execution project was carried out by the architect Francisco Guerao, whose bidding process was attended by two specialized companies.

The works contemplate an integral action in the monument and in its architectural environment, which is in the environment of protection of the church of Santiago, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.

In addition, the current architectural and landscape features in the area of intervention of the project are "degrading to the monument", assuming the rehabilitation of the source and its immediate environment "an improvement" of them, as reflected in the technical reports of the Historical Heritage Service of the Autonomous Community.

The Plenary of Totana already agreed in September 2016, unanimously, at the proposal of the mayor of Historical Heritage, request the then Ministry of Culture and Spokesperson the total subsidy of the cost of the works of rehabilitation of the source and its surroundings, given its progressive state of deterioration.

This baroque monument was built in the 18th century and is located as part of an urban ensemble of great artistic and cultural value.

For a while now, signs of an advanced degenerative state have been observed in the monument, with evident aesthetic degradation and problems of water flow.

This is the work of totanero Silvestre Martínez Teruel, and is part of an urban group of great artistic and cultural value that also served to provide drinking water for the population.

This is an iconic reference element for Totana that was designed by totanero Silvestre Martínez Teruel, a versatile character of his time who is attributed other important works in the municipality.

New denomination: "Fountain of the Plaza"

The Plenary agreed in the session of last November, with the votes in favor of the PSOE and Ganar Totana-IU and against the PP and the non-attached mayor, the proposal of the councilor of Historical Heritage to start the file for the change of denomination and that the currently known as "Juan de Uzeta" happens to be denominated "Fuente de la Plaza", as it has been traditionally known.

The initiative includes that the City Council carry out a cycle of activities to inform Silvestre Martínez Teruel and his extensive facet as an architect, engineer, painter and sculptor, who left us important works that are still today iconic of our history and heritage, and granting him his just recognition as the author of the design, layout and direction of the Fuente de la Plaza, which for centuries supplied drinking water to the inhabitants of the urban area.
