The city of Totana is committed to promoting the protection of biodiversity and ecosystems (21/05/2010)

The Mayor of Totana, José Martínez Andreo, and Council Member for the Environment, Trini Cayuela, commemorated the International Day of Biodiversity through the reading of a manifesto, which was performed by two students of the "la Cruz "through which highlighted the existence of mankind on earth and that all citizens have the right to enjoy a healthy environment, with basic conservation and protection.

The City Council of Totana, through a plenary agreement was incorporated into the Local Governments Network of Biodiversity, 2010, which is part of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) dedicated to the promotion of local policies for conservation and sustainable biodiversity and natural heritage conservation.

This network, which is strengthened through the collaboration agreement between FEMP and the Biodiversity Foundation, aims to promote local policies for the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources, natural heritage conservation and promotion of rural development sustainability criteria.

In this sense, Martínez Andreo noted that the International Year of Biodiversity, to be celebrated on Saturday May 22, offers a great opportunity to give value to the rich natural heritage of our cities and provinces, as well as associated ecosystems, noting that "the exploitation of natural resources, climate change, the change in land use, pollution and invasive species are the most important causes of biodiversity loss, property of all"

Through reading this manifesto, the students of the "La Cruz", Cecilia and Alejandro, have expressed that the loss of biodiversity is not known administrative boundaries and, therefore, their protection and conservation is everyone pointing need to collaborate with other international networks to promote their development and to join efforts to achieve the goal.

They have therefore called on governments, companies, NGOs, scholars and citizens to act quickly and effectively in the conviction that "without the effort of all things will not happen."

With these premises, the City Councilman is committed to promote the protection of biodiversity and associated ecosystem and promote friendly economic activities with conservation to provide new opportunities for sustainable and balanced development to our citizens.

Also, the Mayor of Totana, has congratulated the council on the Environment for the work carried out since the municipal department, stressed that Totana is a reference to regional and national level in this field and in policy implementation environmental.

In this regard, he recalled the award, recently obtained by the project "Increase of biodiversity in the town of Totana: Restoration and management of the Rambla de Lebor as green connector between the mountains of La Tercia-Espuña and Rio Guadalentín" that was state winner of "The Increase of Biodiversity through the draft prepared by the Consistory totanero.

This recognition, as noted by the mayor, awarded by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, the Biodiversity Foundation and the Ministry of Environment, will, through the funding of the € 50,000, restructure and manage the promenade to adapt as green connector between respective ranges.

Through this project we will enhance and strengthen indigenous wild populations in the surroundings of the Rambla de Lebor in each of the sections and recover the structural cohesion of the gully, and the dynamics and the ecological balance in its middle.

Specifically, it will restructure the physical flow of the gully, waste is removed, the ponds will be recovered, among other things.

According to Martínez Andreo, will recover the structure and function of the ravine at its mouth and propose management guidelines to promote agricultural and farming management and connectivity through commitment and collaboration agreements with the various groups involved.

Therefore, the City Council of Totana, part of the Local Governments Network of Biodiversity, held this project involving the same totanera to society through various associations, environmental groups and volunteers.
